The skills and knowledge can be achieved by attending the Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid (PFA) will equip teachers, au pairs and nannies, playgroup leaders, registered child minders and others who work with and look after infants and young children to provide emergency care either in the workplace or in the home.

The course content follows the (UK) Resuscitation Council's guidelines ukresuscitation council and meets the Ofsted requirements for registered childminders and the requirements for nannies under the Approved Carers Scheme.

Course duration:

2 days (minimum of 12 x hours trainer / assessor time)

The Paediatric First Aid course contains two units:

Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid
Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

Assessment type:

Assessment type: continues with external multiple choice exam paper at the end of each unit

Validity of the qualification:

3 years


1 credit


In-house training is provided at the clients location or at an agreed venue to minimise disruption.

The course content:

Unit 1:

- Identify the roles of the paediatric first aider
- Identify the importance of minimising the risk of infection
- Dealing with emergencies
- Managing an unconscious casualty
- Managing a casualty requiring Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Managing a casualty with an obstructed airway and choking
- Dealing with minor circulatory injuries - wounds, bleeding
- Management of a casualty in shock
- Management of a casualty having a seizure

Unit 2:

- Dealing with medical conditions
- Dealing with the effects of extreme heat and cold
- Dealing with skeletal injuries
- Dealing with head, neck and back injuries
- Dealing with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
- Dealing with electric shock
- Dearing with burns and scalds
- Dearing with poisons
- Dealing with bites and stings
- Accident recording and reporting procedures
- Maintaining first aid kits

What the candidate receives:

- A First Aid course book
- An A4 certificate of achievement on achieving the qualification
- Wallet size certificate on achieving the qualification

Level 2 in Emergency First Aid at Work
Level 3 in First Aid at Work
Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering
Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace
